Rich in Paradise

A great example of Italian House from 1989, and the first of 3 episodes covering my personal history with North Sydney's Metropolis night club Greater Dub - Severed Heads1991Used with the permission of Tom Ellard Support the show

[00:00:00] Stand by for action

[00:00:10] Every show we drop the needle on the tracks that were part of the mixed tapes and mixed tapes of my 80s and 90s

[00:00:17] tunes that followed me on the train in the morning and the way to my adventures on the weekend and all the times in between

[00:00:25] Please join me as I share a track from the record box

[00:00:28] What I remember a little bit of history and a hell of a lot of nostalgia

[00:00:34] By Michael and please join me as we get lost in 12 inches

[00:00:39] who may

[00:01:05] This is FBI project an Italian house act started in 1989

[00:01:11] FBI stands for Fratti Presti and Intra Zali the surnames of the three founding members and their debut track

[00:01:18] This song a cover version of a 1977 song by Lamont Ozi a an album track from his release

[00:01:25] Peddling music on the side now this version of the song takes its samples from Richard Havens

[00:01:32] 1980 cover it's a bit more disco than the original we also have samples from

[00:01:37] T99 is too nice to be real honesty 69s rich in paradise and

[00:01:41] The yeah, we drum beat

[00:01:43] The result is a great early example of Italian house and probably one of the first Italian tracks

[00:01:49] But a lot of people hurt from a chart perspective was reasonably successful in Europe charting in the top 20 in all the countries

[00:01:56] Top 10 in the UK hitting number five in Austria and Germany

[00:02:00] But now it knows but it was popular in the clubs and one of those clubs was

[00:02:05] Metropolis in North Sydney and all the places I frequented from the late 80s through to the 90s

[00:02:12] Metropolis was probably the place I visited the most

[00:02:16] Located on the first floor on the corner of Mountain Walker Street

[00:02:20] Metropolis opened in late 1988 to much fanfare

[00:02:24] It was a venue with an aesthetic pulled straight out of the movie. It's named after as soon as you turn the corner from Mount Street

[00:02:32] It was there a bust of the robot Maria from Fritz Lang's classic

[00:02:37] Announcing the club's presence. It wanted you to know what was there

[00:02:42] Walker Street dipped about 15 meters from the corner. You came to the club's glass double doors

[00:02:48] Through these there was a wide scare case leading to the door person at their little podium on the left and

[00:02:54] The hatch for the courtroom on the right after paying presenting a ticket or showing a membership

[00:02:59] Getting stamped and dread dropping off whatever wasn't needed for the rest of the evening

[00:03:04] The doorman would open another glass door and you begin upon entering depending on the type of event

[00:03:10] But for most nights a large space greeted you

[00:03:13] Sometimes bar tables or DJ booth at one end but always space for lots of bodies

[00:03:20] To your left there was a long bar where with white with illuminated shells holding a fine selection of spirits from around the world

[00:03:27] To the right of the bar. There were double double black doors

[00:03:31] Leading to the boiler room. There's had no room

[00:03:34] On the right as you entered there was steps leading up to a mezzanine with a multitude of seating options

[00:03:40] Another bar with the same array of options and a set of doors leading to an expansive outdoor area with its own bar and

[00:03:48] More chilled out music on the sound system and from when it opened in 88

[00:03:52] It was spending big on advertising in three 3d world

[00:03:56] Every week there'd be an ad from some kind of upcoming event as we moved into 1989

[00:04:02] I was able to try to place out for myself and I loved it now when I heard you could do formals there

[00:04:10] I was all in on making that happen now

[00:04:13] I'd suggest to the venue I'd make calls to get the ball rolling

[00:04:17] It'd be dinner wine pre-pina drinks and an open bar with beer and wine only from 9 p.m.

[00:04:23] 11, I think it cost like 60 bucks ahead now we'd pick the date and said yes

[00:04:29] Entering on the big on the night the big open area was filled with bad tables

[00:04:34] We were handed a glass of some Australian sparkling wine and motioned up to the mezzanine

[00:04:39] This is where most of my classmates were milling around with their dates in their kind of clicks

[00:04:44] Now they were trying to call in their rented tuxes, but I was wearing a proper tuxet

[00:04:50] Now pick this up second hand the year before

[00:04:53] Beautifully cut custom made from the 1950s

[00:04:57] double breasted dinner jacket a

[00:04:59] Handmade black silk dinner shirt and a white bow tie the whole nine yards

[00:05:04] I kind of look like one of the villains at the end at the beginning of Temple of Dune and with my date Alice in a

[00:05:10] Swing cocktail dress we made a striking pair now

[00:05:14] I did know a lot of the girls my friends had brought the states, but Alice hadn't met any of my friends

[00:05:20] But she was outstanding chatting confident engaging was amazing now then we will call for dinner nothing special

[00:05:29] You stand kind of back there now before I

[00:05:32] Yeah, the tables were in the big area

[00:05:35] So and there was space for dance for now dinner came with wine and that was rather fleece free-flowing

[00:05:40] And with the addition of the open bar we got pretty pissed not too pissed

[00:05:46] Just marry we drank we talked shit. He danced. I do like to cut a rug

[00:05:52] So would rich in paradise make it into my monthly playlist if the algorithm thought I might like it

[00:05:59] well

[00:06:02] Yes, it would and now we are at the end of another nostalgia trip
